In 2006, the Missouri Racquetball Association established the Mike Pohlman Memorial Classic Racquetball Tournament to honor Mike Pohlman -- a champion on and off the racquetball court -- who passed away in 2006. The tournament will be held annually in September and its proceeds will be put into the Mike Pohlman Memorial Fund. The Fund will provide two $1,000.00 college scholarships annually to players in the Missouri High School Racquetball Association League (1 for a Senior Boy and 1 for a Senior Girl). The tournament and the scholarships will help keep the memory of Mike Pohlman alive.

Mike was an avid Open-level racquetball player and friend to many in the Missouri/Illinois racquetball family. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack while on a bike ride in May, 2006 at the age of 48. Everyone who knew Mike or watched him play was impressed with his spirit for life and the sportsmanship and effort he displayed playing racquetball. He always encouraged a healthy lifestyle and took several young athletes under his wing over the years both on the court and in his profession of physcial therapy. He was a role model to all and will never be forgotten. Mike’s memory will live on through these scholarships as they will serve as a means for Mike to continue showing his support for the game of racquetball and the young players who participate.

These undergraduate scholarships will be awarded to the students most qualified according to academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities, and involvement in racquetball. Measures of these traits include the cumulative grade point average, leadership roles in extracurricular activities, and level of participation/performance, as well as sportsmanship.

The first scholarships were awarded in March, 2007.
